Men's Health

Knowledge is Power. The more you know about your health, the better the decisions you can make.

Ignorance may be bliss, but not when it comes to your health. Your doctor—and the medical community—keep telling you to get screened for certain diseases and conditions. The goal is to help you live a longer, healthier, more productive life.

Truth be told

We're not invincible. The fact is, many conditions can lie dormant for years without symptoms. Screening can help you identify health issues before they become a serious problem.

Reduce the risk of heart disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. However, you can dramatically reduce your risk by talking to your doctor to formulate a plan and taking these 5 steps:

  • Check your cholesterol. Men over 20 should get checked at least every 5 years. If you're over 50 or have risk factors, you should do it more often.
  • Monitor your blood pressure. You can do it in the doctor's office, and even in some drug stores. High blood pressure can be easily controlled with medication and lifestyle changes.
  • Manage diabetes If you have it, or have risk factors, you should monitor your blood sugar levels. This is a common blood test.
  • Stay active! Everyone—at every age—should get at least 2½ hours of moderate exercise every week. Take a brisk walk, ride a bike, or join a class and meet new people. Get in the habit now.
  • Follow your treatment plan. If you take medications, follow your doctor's instructions. If you don't understand something, ask. Keep taking your medications according to your doctor's instructions, even if you start feeling better.

Sexually transmitted infections (STI): If you're sexually active you should get tested. Many people are infected and don't know it because often there are no symptoms. Untreated, STIs can cause serious health problems. Medicos offers simple laboratory tests for:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Hepatitis B and C
  • HIV
